Who we are
As an Alzheimer's caregiver, I'm a person who does more than look after someone. I'm also a person who knows that I’m not alone in this journey and that support is out there. I will be sharing some of my personal experiences so that we can explore tools and approaches that help navigate the complexities of caregiving. The goal of this blog is not to replace a caregiving support group, a therapist, or a medical doctor, but rather to supplement these efforts.
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and irreversible brain disorder that affects memory, cognition, and behavior. In the initial stages of Alzheimer’s, patients can struggle with short-term memory loss, which causes them to forget what happened just a short time ago. This can have a profound impact on them and their loved ones. They may repeat questions, forget things, and have difficulty planning or focusing. It can be easy to take it personally when they repeat things you just told them, or forget to return phone calls. However, it’s important to realize that the patient isn't trying to be difficult or rude. They genuinely cannot help what they do because of their disease.
Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can be a rollercoaster of emotions. There are moments of joy and laughter, but there are also times of frustration and sadness. Be ready for the good times and the bad. This is going to be one wild ride, but I hope you can take something positive away from it.
